After two weeks of special care, my little guy Chico, is finally fully recovered from his neutering surgery. It is very important follow certain steeps before and after the surgery to help your dog have an easy and speedy recovery.
{BEFORE}
- Talk to your vet and make sure your dog has blood work done. This information will be helpful to deal with any anaesthetic reactions after the surgery or to know if your dog can actually be under anaesthetics.
- Get your dog used to the E Collar. Remember after the surgery he cannot lick the incision to avoid infections. Be mindful your dog wont feel his best so adding extra stress by introducing the E Collar wont be a nice experience.
- Give your dog a bath as he wont be able to take a bath two weeks after the surgery.
- Your dog will require special care the days after the surgery as he cannot go for long walks. Perhaps you will want to take a couple days off to chill with him just after the surgery.
- Talk to your dog walker as his regular dog walking schedule will have to be modified. Walks should be short and mellow. Group dog walks during this time is not recomendable.
{AFTER}
- Have a comfy bed where your dog can lay down without having to jump up.
- Have plenty of sheets and towels on the first night he is back home, as he may have accidents or will vomit. Remember he just is coming out of the anesthetic.
- To keep him busy the days to follow after the surgery, have some chewy treats he can work on or, have KONGS ready with yummy fillings to entertain him like frozen peanut butter to frozen coconut oil.
- Check up on your dog’s incision to ensure he is healing properly. Follow your vet’s instruction on how to cheek out this on your dog.
- LOVE your dog even if he gets smelly… after a whole day at the vet, they can get stinky.
