It is not a secrete we are all about supporting and volunteering for rescue groups. We’re thrilled to present today a very special guest.  Meet Wendy and Moose!

The Dane Dame is run by Dame Wendy and inspired daily by her Dane Moose who share their lives together as urbanites in nearby Ottawa, Ontario. As a Veterinary Technologist by trade, Wendy helps give a voice to animals in science by day as a Research Analyst for the Canadian Council on Animal Care. In her spare time she rescues Great Danes and blogs about her adventures by night.

Wendy is the owner of a deaf Great Dane named Moose, she is a Great Dane foster Mom and front line Great Dane rescue worker. On walks with her foster gentle giants she found herself repeatedly being asked if there were actually enough Great Danes in need for their own breed-specific rescue. In hearing about her foster experiences, she was continually applauded for her efforts despite being told “they” could never perform such a heart-breaking task. From this, The Dane Dame was born! It’s your hub for all things Great Dane for the Dane owner, foster parent, rescue volunteer, and the Great Dane enthusiast in you. You’ll find everything from tales from the world of Great Dane rescue, resources for caring for your Great Dane as well as the most sought out, yet hard to find giant dog breed products. All in hopes to educate and support owners in proper Great Dane care in an attempt to prevent their surrender and inspire other Dane lovers to join the ranks of rescue. The Dane Dame provides inspirational content for Great Dane owners and lovers around the world. Since their very first and most popular post – Letter to My Foster Dog – The Dane Dame has become the place to visit for the discerning Great Dane owner.

So why are Great Danes brought into rescue in the first place? Great Danes are absolutely wonderful dogs, but they are not for everybody. First off, Great Danes come in one size only…extra-large! And unfortunately some fall in love with those big puppy dog eyes not realizing just how quickly the rest of the body will catch up. Not to mention that everything is bigger with a Dane, from food requirements to furniture needs and vet bills too!

When it comes to behaviour, they are called gentle giants for a reason, as despite their size they are a very sensitive breed. You must exert your leadership status confidently so you’re not dragged around the neighborhood when they decide to chase a squirrel but you must do so in a mild manner as they can be easily offended by a harsh tone of voice making the Dame the perfect companion for a Dane! In spite of their regal appearance they are really big clumsy babies at heart. They have no idea of their actual size, they believe they have the right to sit on your lap just as any other dog would do, and food left out on the counter (Dane height) is obviously fair game! They are a very protective breed and loving of their owners, and don’t do well separated from loved ones and as such should never reside as an outdoor dog or be kenneled. Their sensitive nature can lead to anxiety triggering the most feared aliment in Danes: bloat, the number one fatal health concern of discerning Dane owners.

Specific breed rescues.

Fostering is a crucial factor for a rescue to continue helping dogs in need.

Most dogs, including Great Danes, come into rescue because of “people” problems, not dog problems! But unexpected size, lack of control and/or training, and cost are some of the top reasons owners surrender their Great Danes. So when considering any breed as a pet, do your homework.

A great way to experience all the love a Dane has to offer is to get involved in Great Dane rescue. Fostering Great Danes has been one of the most rewarding things this Dane Dame has ever done. Opening your heart and home to Danes in need is one of the greatest things you can do to help them on their way to their forever home. And if you’re looking to volunteer, foster, adopt, or even surrender a Great Dane there are some amazing Great Dane-specific rescues that have loads of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to offer help.

Danes in Distress is the longest-running Great Dane rescue in Canada, Great Dane Angels, the new kid on the block offers a rehab-pack of Great Danes that help with the rehabilitation of those with extreme behavioural issues, Birch Haven Rescue and Rehabilitation Services has a focus on giant breeds with special needs, and last but not least, Friendly Giants advocate for and take in giant breed dogs. Now having the inside scoop, ask yourself, do you still want to foster or adopt a Great Dane? If your answer is YES, welcome to the pack!
